Un pittore di talento, pastorista e stampatrice, Mary Cassatt occupa un posto unico nella storia dell'arte americana. Era l'unica americana ad esibirsi con gli Impressionisti, e questa alleanza iniziale portò alla sua reputazione all'inizio del XX secolo come uno dei maggiori artisti americani. Il rapporto intimo tra madre e bambino è il tema più strettamente identificato con Cassatt. Ha ritratto questa particolare coppia, su cui sappiamo molto poco, in sei pastelli, adottando la pratica dei colleghi francesi di lavorare in una serie. La qualità abbozzata dell'opera, con i suoi tratti staccato di pastello e l'immediatezza fresca, lo rendono il più impressionistico del gruppo.
