Quest'ultima scena, comunemente dall'arte bizantina, non proviene dalla Bibbia ma da uno dei vangeli apocrifi, il Nicodemo. Si dice che quando Cristo è depositato nella tomba, scende al limbo per liberare i giusti, che non erano stati in grado di aderire alla fede cristiana, personaggi che erano davanti a lui, erano dell'Antico Testamento. Ecco perché è rappresentato accanto ad Adamo ed Eva e ad altri che sono stati identificati come Abramo, Isacco, Giacobbe, Mosè e Davide. Per quanto riguarda Cristo, egli si rappresenta senza barba perché ciò che discende in limbo è la sua anima e l'anima nel Medioevo è stata rappresentata come un bambino.
