Il primo artista americano ad iscriversi alla Royal Academy di Londra, Brown studiò anche sotto i suoi compatrioti Gilbert Stuart e Benjamin West. Brown rimase a Londra per gran parte della sua carriera e godì il picco del suo successo durante la fine del 1780, a circa il tempo ha dipinto questo ritratto elaborato. Come Copley, il cui lavoro ha emulato, Brown circonda il volto acutamente definito della sua sitter con indumenti, oggetti di scena e effetti di sfondo. Era ben noto per la sua complessa rappresentazione di tessuti, come in prove ampie qui.
