Mather Brown nacque a Boston, figlio di un orologiaio e discendente di diversi famosi divini del New England, tra cui Cotton Mather e Aumentare Mather. Dopo aver lavorato come ritrattista itinerante in New England, Brown andò a Londra nel 1780 per studiare con Benjamin West. Divenne ritrattista di moda in varie città della provincia. La giovane ragazza elegantemente vestita guarda dalla sua musica al pianoforte, che porta l'etichetta 1797 dello studio londinese di Kirkman.
