Barend Cornelis Koekkoek e Wijnandus Johannes Josephus Nuyen combinarono il paesaggio romantico con una rinascita dello stile olandese seicentesco, in particolare il drammatico dipinto di umore di Jacob van Ruisdael e Allaert van Everdingen. Quando aveva venti anni, Nuyen viaggiò in Francia. Qui incontrò artisti che dipingevano in modo romantico, con forti contrasti di luce e ombra, colori intensi e un senso di dramma. Nuyen divenne affascinato da questo stile di pittura e presto emerse come il principale artista romantico dell'Olanda. Questo dipinto è un buon esempio del suo lavoro, con un castello rovinato, un albero morto soffiato giù dal vento, nuvole scudding attraverso il cielo, e ombre oscurare il paesaggio. Il lavoro di Nuyen era innovativo ed esuberante dagli standard olandesi.
