Il dipinto raffigura un tè in stile inglese nel Salon Four-Mirror del Palais du Temple di Parigi nel 1766. I saloni, i luoghi di conversazione in ambienti sociali sofisticati a Parigi e nelle province, hanno svolto un ruolo importante nella vita culturale del XVIII secolo. Le imprese artistiche, i problemi di decorazione e gli sforzi letterari sono diventati tutti argomenti nei saloni. È interessante notare che il termine designazione incontri sociali è stato applicato anche al modo dominante di mostra artistica, i famosi Saloni di pittura.
