Avendo pubblicato nel 1896 un saggio sull'opera di Edgar Degas nella rivista Pan, Max Liebermann andò avanti più tardi quell'anno per creare un ritratto per la stessa pubblicazione, raffigurante il poeta e autore Theodor Fontane. Le poesie di Fontane erano presenti anche in Pan, prodotto dalla casa editrice di suo figlio a Berlino. Liebermann aveva quasi 50 anni quando creò il ritratto, il suo soggetto circa 25 anni il suo senior. Questo ritratto busto dà una vista frontale di Fontane, che mantiene una postura molto eretta e una posa piuttosto grave, ufficiale – senza dubbio sentito dall'artista per essere più appropriato ai fini del ritratto.
