Nato di mezzi di classe media a Filadelfia, Mae Howard Jackson era influente nella scultura americana e pedagogia artistica afroamericana. Fu mentorizzata dalla pionieristica scultrice africana Meta Warrick Fuller, ma decise di seguire Fuller a Parigi per continuare i suoi studi. Jackson invece si sposò, si stabilì a Washington e divenne mentore e istruttore di molti altri artisti neri, tra cui James Porter e il nipote del marito Sargent Johnson.
