Destinato ad essere inserito in pannelli decorativi sopra una porta, questo dipinto ha più senso quando visto da sotto. Da questo punto di vista, la prospettiva drammatica, le ombre, e sotto il profilo del vaso ingannano l'occhio a credere che questo non è affatto un dipinto, ma la cosa stessa. Questa opera era una volta di proprietà di Georges Hoentschel (1855-1915), un interior designer che ha preso oggetti dalla sua collezione come modelli e ispirazione per i suoi progetti. Intorno al 1905, Hoentschel utilizzò questo dipinto come base per le nuove overdoor in stile Luigi XVI nella casa di campagna inglese Luton Hoo.
