Nel 1842 l'industria fotografica arrivò in Perù. Fotografi francesi e da altre nazionalità arrivarono nel territorio peruviano e realizzarono studi fotografici che registrarono i tempi. La vendita di fotografie divenne parte di un circuito commerciale focalizzato sulle élite, ma con l'avanzamento e l'a buon mercato delle tecnologie riproduttive, apparve un mercato più dinamico: quello della vendita delle carte da visita. Allo stesso modo, la stampa e i media editoriali hanno illustrato i loro testi utilizzando fotografie, trasformando le immagini in in incisioni, inizialmente attraverso l'uso del taglio del legno per ottenere la loro stampa.
