Per la biografia di Jacob Cats vedere l'ingresso sul 1634 Ritratto di Van Mierevelt di Jacob Cats (SK-A-258). L'unica differenza sostanziale tra il ritratto presente e quello, che lo mostra anche busto-lunghezza e in profilo perso contro uno sfondo scuro, è il suo abbigliamento. Il colletto rotondo e il tabbaard indossato da Cats nel ritratto del 1634 sono visibili nella pittura attuale come un pentimento. Sembra, allora, che Van Mierevelt ha aggiornato una replica del ritratto di Cats che aveva in magazzino.
