Gustavo II Adolfo era figlio di Carl IX Gustafsson Vasa e della sua seconda moglie Christina, Duchessa di Hollstein-Gottorp. Ascese il trono svedese nel 1611, sposò Eleonora, Margravino di Brandeburgo, nel 1620, e fu ucciso nei pressi di Lützen il 16 novembre 1632.Il ritratto perso di Van Mierevelt di Gustavo II Adolfo è conosciuto da un'incisione del 1633 da suo genero Willem Jacobsz Delff.2 Il dipinto attuale è una copia piuttosto mediocre del ritratto di Van Mierevelt o dell'incisione riproduttiva di Delff.
