Il termine carro fu applicato in tempi antichi ai veicoli a due ruote utilizzati per la guerra, per le corse e per la cerimonia. Circa il 1650 il nome fu risuscitato e applicato ad eleganti semicosche caratterizzate da un corpo elevato e ruote alte. Più leggero e meno costoso di allenatori completi, i carri erano veicoli di lusso popolari nel XVIII e XIX secolo. Questa versione prende il nome dal suo designer, Alfred Guillaume Gabriel Count D
