Nel 1870, quando William Morris iniziò a progettare tessuti stampati, era spesso a Leek, una piccola città industriale nello Staffordshire e una posizione chiave per la tintura di seta. Qui Morris aveva convinto Thomas Wardle, cognato del direttore dello showroom di Morris & Co. George Wardle, ad assisterlo in esperimenti di tintura su larga scala. Anche se il padre e il nonno di Wardle usavano coloranti naturali, dai tempi moderni coloranti chimici di Wardle avevano sostituito queste tecniche più antiche. Morris aveva già sperimentato con coloranti vegetali nel seminterrato della sua casa di Londra in Queen’s Square.
