Clemence Sophie Harned Lozier ha stabilito la prima scuola medica per le donne a New York. Lozier si laureò al Syracuse Medical College nel 1853. Nel 1863 aprì il New York Medical College and Hospital for Women a New York City. Le donne venivano da tutto il mondo per allenarsi con lei. Purtroppo avevano bisogno di scorta di polizia per frequentare le loro cliniche al Bellevue Hospital, perché medici e studenti medici maschili li hanno molestati mentre si sono fatti strada lì. Un attivista nella lotta per il suffragio femminile, Lozier sostenne anche l'abolizione e la medicina omeopatica
