La morte prematura del celebre poeta a Missolonghi nel 1824 scosse l'intero mondo civilizzato. Byron il Romantico divenne un simbolo eroico di libertà per il movimento filollenista, che sostenne la guerra greca di indipendenza contro i Turchi. Il poeta inglese è bagnato in un bagliore rosso come un antico eroe greco. I titoli delle sue poesie sono inscritti in corone di alloro lungo il bordo del suo letto.
