"Questa serie di trittico illustra la tentazione soprannaturale di Sant'Antonio durante il suo soggiorno in Egitto, un tema che è stato trattato anche da molti altri artisti, tra cui Martin Schongauer, Mathias Gruenewald, Salvador Dali, e Gustave Flaubert. Il simbolismo nei dipinti simboleggia la storia, che raffigura Anthony rifuggire da molti diversi tipi di peccato in tutta la serie. Le immagini fantastiche sono tipiche dello stile nightmarish di Bosch, completo di imps, mostri e creature dismorfiche.
