Nicolás Enríquez, la cui carriera è durata più di sei decenni, è meglio conosciuto come specialista in dipinti su rame. Ha spesso basato le sue composizioni sulle stampe europee, come ha fatto in questo dipinto, che deriva da un'opera dell'artista fiammingo Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640). La popolarità del soggetto, in cui la Trinità celeste è rispecchiata da quella terrena della Sacra Famiglia, può essere attribuita alla crescente importanza del culto di San Giuseppe. Il santo, raffigurato qui come un giovane coniuge e padre, fu fatto patrono della Nuova Spagna nel 1555.
