Pirosmani non ha avuto molto di una vita familiare. All'età di sei anni, suo fratello maggiore morì, seguito da entrambi i suoi genitori due anni dopo. Le sue altre due sorelle andarono a vivere con altri parenti, lasciando il ragazzo solo. Fu assunto dal datore di lavoro del padre e dalla moglie, che aveva sei figli. Anche se Pirosmani ha vissuto con la famiglia per oltre 15 anni, era poco più di un animale domestico di famiglia, prendendosi cura dei bambini più piccoli, e dato pochissima guida. L'ingenuità infantile di Pirosmani nella pittura può avere avuto più a causa della mancanza di cura che ha ricevuto mentre cresce più della sua mancanza di una formazione formale nella pittura.
