Nicholaos Tzafouris fu uno dei numerosi pittori iconi che lavoravano nella città di Candia (oggi Iraklion) a Creta, quando Creta era sotto il controllo di Venezia. La combinazione di elementi bizantini e latini visti in molte icone cretesi è stata ben accolta localmente e in Italia. L'iscrizione greca su questa icona descrive un tipo icona bizantina in cui i soldati trascinano Cristo in Golgota. L'immagine qui, tuttavia, è occidentale di tipo, mostrando Cristo che porta la croce a Golgota. Il soldato davanti a Cristo indossa l'armatura italiana contemporanea, e quelli dietro di lui indossano l'armatura bizantina o cretese.
