La lunga iscrizione dell'artista conferma che la precisa rappresentazione delle condizioni stagionali era meno importante per lui in questo lavoro che i suoi sentimenti circa il periodo dell'anno e il suo rapporto con l'intera tradizione della cultura literati in Cina e Giappone. Il colophon, basato su un poema di Shen Zhou (1427–1509), un noto pittore cinese Ming, indica anche che l'opera è stata creata durante la visita di un caro amico di nome Nankai ed è stata destinata a Kōhō, monaco-painter di Echigo (ora Prefettura di Niigata). Noro Kaiseki, artista nanga che si alleò sotto Ike Taiga (1723–1776), lavorò nella provincia meridionale di Wakayama e pubblicò una raccolta di scritti intitolato Gadan (Chats on Paintings).
