Ogata Kenzan imparò la ceramica dal grande artista di Kyoto nonomura Ninsei, e aprì il suo forno nel 1699. Con l'aiuto del fratello maggiore Ogata Korin (1658-1716), Kenzan fuse i mondi della ceramica e della pittura, creando vasi alimentari brillanti che guadagnarono la lode larga. Mentre si avvicinò a settanta anni, Kenzan lasciò il suo studio di ceramica al figlio adottivo, e cominciò a dipingere opere puramente grafiche in serio.
