Una variante più grande della composizione attuale, in cui i pastori sono sostituiti da figure di San Francesco e Maria Maddalena, si trova nella Galleria Doria Pamphili di Roma. Come la pala d'altare, datata 1527, il dipinto attuale è un lavoro tardivo. Il paesaggio è influenzato dal contemporaneo di L'Ortolano, Dosso Dossi.
