Cézanne acquistò un appezzamento di terreno sul Chemin des Lauves, su una collina altrimenti non sviluppata a nord di Aix, e aveva una casa a due piani costruita con un grande studio, alto circa cinque metri, al primo piano. Ha usato lo studio presto la mattina e nel tardo pomeriggio. Quando divenne troppo caldo, dipingerebbe acquerelli sulla terrazza, che era circondato da cespugli e piccoli alberi e aveva una magnifica vista della città di Aix.
