Gli studiosi del ventesimo secolo identificarono quest'uomo con le scottature mutton-chop come lo stesso Cézanne, ma in realtà è l'amico dell'artista, Gustave Boyer, un avvocato che sedeva per altri due ritratti intorno al 1870–71. La superficie pittorica di questa tela, l'uso liberale del nero e del grigio, e le forme audacemente realizzate sono tipiche del lavoro di Cézanne all'epoca.
