Nell'autunno del 1866, Cézanne intraprese una serie di dipinti del suo zio materno, Dominique Aubert, in costumi diversi. Qui, dona una vestaglia e un cappuccio blu nappettato. In un altro lavoro della collezione del Met, egli pone come monaco (1993.400.1). Un amico ha riferito: "Ogni giorno appare un ritratto [nuovo] di lui." Cézanne ha applicato la sua vernice direttamente con un coltello da tavolo sulla tela intrecciata grossolanamente, dando a queste immagini quello che ha chiamato un carattere "gutsy".
