Gli oggetti del luogo comune in questa vita ingannevolmente semplice permettono a Paul Cézanne di mettersi una sfida compositiva. Contrasta la morbidezza dei frutti, che appaiono quasi scultorei, con le foglie piatte della pianta. Rifiuta anche la prospettiva convenzionale. Lo sfondo, forse il rovescio di una tela allungata, chiude la nostra vista e crea ulteriore ambiguità spaziale. Siamo costretti a leggere l'immagine meno come una vita ancora e più come un gioco vivace di forme e colori.
