Sono note solo due sculture in marmo di Gauguin, questa testa di ritratto della moglie danese Mette e uno di suo figlio, Emile, scolpito nello stesso anno. All'epoca la famiglia Gauguin viveva in un appartamento in Rue des Fourneaux, a Parigi, che apparteneva a uno scultore di nome Bouillot. Considerando l'inesperienza di Gauguin come scultore in marmo, e il naturalismo altamente realizzato di questo lavoro, sembra probabile che Bouillot abbia aiutato Gauguin nella scultura, ma in che misura non è conosciuto.
