Anche se ha creato molte opere serie per poesie epiche di grandi autori, Dore ha anche illustrato molte fiabe, tra cui Little Red Riding Hood e Cendrillon, o Cenerentola. La storia di Cenerentola era tanto un'influenza culturale nel XIX secolo come è oggi, come è una storia di circostanze ingiuste e la capacità umana di sperare che la magia possa aiutarci a superare quelle circostanze. Era nel XIX secolo che il Grimm del Fratello scrisse la versione della storia che era ampiamente popolare all'epoca. La loro grande raccolta delle loro fiabe fu pubblicata per la prima volta nel 1812, e numerose edizioni seguirono la prima per la successiva per tutto il XIX secolo, tutte ampiamente illustrate, comprese le opere di Gustave Dore.
