Gustave Doré rimase a Londra tra il 1868 e il 1873. Durante questo periodo ha fatto studi di fiori ragazze dalla Royal Exchange, dipingendole paradossalmente con cesti francesi. Il biografo di Doré ha affermato che “è stato toccato dalla triste bellezza che si trova nei poveri venditori di fiori di strada”, una simpatia che forse si può sentire in questo dipinto. Le opere di Doré hanno evidenziato il golfo tra l’alta società e la vita triste dei poveri nella capitale.
