Tra giugno e dicembre 1845, Paul Kane viaggiò attraverso alcuni dei Grandi Laghi che disegnavano paesaggi e i popoli che incontrava. Più tardi, nel suo studio di Toronto, riferendosi ai suoi schizzi per l'ispirazione e il dettaglio, sviluppò dipinti formali a olio su tela e olio su tavola. La pesca di Torch Light raffigura gli indiani Menominee sull'Upper Fox River, Wisconsin, spearfishing utilizzando i fari in fiamme per attirare il pesce.
