In 1910 , Klee fece la sua prima mostra personale , e l'anno dopo , conobbe wassily kandinsky e franz marc , due figure d'avanguardia nel mondo dell'arte . un'ulteriore visita a parigi nel 1912 lo espose a esempi di cubismo e arte astratta , o “ pittura pura , ” che lo ha portato a sperimentare da solo con forme astratte e tavolozze di colori . il suo lavoro sul paesaggio case vicino alla cava di ghiaia , è uno dei primi di tali esperimenti , che utilizzava blocchi di colore che non si sovrapponevano . Questo dipinto illustra anche il suo tentativo di iniziare a astrarre le forme visive in forme e colori che hanno portato all'idea del design , piuttosto che dipingere il disegno stesso .
