Durante la guerra mondiale Io, ogni momento in cui poteva allontanarsi dai suoi doveri clericali nell'ufficio del paymaster a Gersthofen, nei pressi di Augsburg, Klee dedicato al suo lavoro. Prendeva una scatola di acquerelli e dipingeva fuori porta. Qui, una luna verde e la sua mezzaluna mauve sono le uniche forme curve all'interno di una composizione angolare i cui rettangoli, triangoli e quadrati suggeriscono i tetti e facciate di case.
