Salières, che studiò con il pittore accademico Paul Delaroche, fece il suo debutto al Salone di Parigi del 1847 e mostrò questo dipinto l'anno successivo; conserva la sua cornice originale. Questa è in modo ostensivo una scena di vita quotidiana nella regione nativa Languedoc dell'artista. Ma per molti spettatori della metà del XIX secolo avrebbe evocato La cruche cassée (The Broken Pitcher), l'iconica pittura di innocenza perduta di Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725–1805), allora come ora nel Musée du Louvre, Parigi.
