A Ōtira Gorge nelle Alpi Meridionali, Petrus van der Velden divenne ossessionato dal torrente di montagna, dipinto almeno 11 volte in due anni. Egli credeva che studiare la natura avrebbe potuto portare una comunicazione più stretta con Dio, e cercò ‘luoghi solitari che ancora portano l’impressione della Mano Onnipotente’. Dei dipinti di Ōtira, lo studioso Rodney Wilson scrisse:La natura è dotata di un'intensità spirituale e l'uomo si sente indifeso prima di covare i cieli e schiantare le acque. Otira conosce la luce solare, anche se infrequente, e Van der Velden ci permette di conoscerla a momenti più leggeri; ma il ciclo è caratterizzato quasi esclusivamente dall'unico stato di malinconia.
