Durante il suo viaggio di mare del 1832 lungo la costa norvegese, Balke si unì a un convoglio militare a Tromsø. Un uragano fuori dalla penisola di Nordkyn costrinse il gruppo a cercare rifugio per una settimana alla fortezza di Vardøhus, oggetto di questo quadro monocromatico, datato 1844. I suoi pregiati fiori pittorici e toni bruni ricordano opere dell'artista francese romantico Théodore Gudin (1802-1880), che Balke ammirava al Salon di Parigi del 1836. I primi collezionisti dei dipinti di Balke sono raramente conosciuti. Un'iscrizione sul retro di questo suggerisce che è stata acquisita dall'artista l'anno in cui l'ha dipinto, forse durante il suo secondo soggiorno a Dresda.
