Nel 1860 Balke sviluppò una semplificazione radicale della forma e una direttività nel modo in cui applicò la vernice al supporto. In questa vista allucinatoria, una montagna spettrale sorge attraverso le nuvole e la nebbia, la sua base completamente oscurata dalla fitta nebbia. Le rocce e il surf sono resi con vernice leggermente più corposa. Lo strato di terra bianco è visibile in tutta la composizione. Ci sono pochi, se del caso, paralleli a questo dipinto tra le opere dei contemporanei di Balke in Norvegia o altrove in Europa.
