Balke visitò il Capo Nord solo una volta, nel 1832, ma l'esperienza divenne un tocco della sua immaginazione per il resto della sua vita. La tavolozza tenebrosa e la pennellata espressiva vista in questa vista illuminata dalla luna sono caratteristiche dello stile maturo di Balke, che si trova in contrasto con il naturalismo più restrittivo del suo mentore Johan Christian Dahl. Quando questo dipinto (o un'altra versione) fu esposto a Oslo nell'autunno del 1848, un critico scrisse che "chiama il nostro interesse, sia per la natura del soggetto stesso che per la singolarità della percezione del momento scelto".
