Vigée Le Brun e Marie Antoinette nacquero entrambi nel 1755. La regina diede alla luce il suo primo figlio, Madame Royale, nel 1778, e Madame Le Brun alla figlia Julie nel 1780. Diversi anni dopo, una Vigée Le Brun incinta arrivò per una seduta a Versailles. Nel suo desiderio di compiacere la regina, ha rovesciato i suoi pennelli sul pavimento. Quando si appoggiò a prenderli, fu fermata da Marie Antoinette, che, come scrisse Vigée Le Brun, “insegnò a raccoglierli tutti. ”
