Il pittore in miniatura Hall è stato tra una serie di ritrattisti svedesi che hanno goduto di enorme popolarità in Francia, mostrando al Salon ufficiale e patrocinato dall'élite culturale e politica. Il sitter, Maurice, iniziò come avvocato prima di diventare un ritrattista che contò l'imperatrice Caterina la Grande (1729–1796) e la regina Maria Antonietta (1755–1793) tra i suoi sostenitori. Dated 1772, questa miniatura raffigura Maurice nel colletto aperto e vestiti semplici che devono essere stati destinati ad annunciare la sua nuova carriera come artista.
