Dopo aver servito il suo apprendistato ad Anversa, Rubens si trasferì in Italia nel 1600, lavorando a Venezia, Roma e Genova, e in particolare a Mantova, presso la corte del duca Vincenzo Gonzaga II. Ha studiato e copiato acutamente capolavori dell'arte greca e romana classica e del Rinascimento italiano, sviluppando il suo nuovo stile barocco. Per volere del duca Gonzaga II, Rubens viaggiò in Spagna in missione diplomatica. Qui incontrò la potente dinastia dei governanti asburgici, e considerò Carlo V come la figura fondatrice di questo potere imperiale. L'imperatore è raffigurato in armatura splendente e indossa l'Ordine della Flotta d'Oro e le insegne del suo ufficio: corona, scettro, spada e globo, che simboleggia il suo ampio dominio. La corona è sotto forma di una corona privata asburgica; questi erano per lo più mitrali.
