Il nome di Sauvage era sinonimo di trompe l’oeil (fool l’occhio) dipinti che imitavano la scultura antica a basso rilievo e divennero enormemente popolari per la decorazione della camera neoclassica. Il dipinto attuale è destinato a imitare il bronzo. Sauvage espose una versione leggermente più grande di questo soggetto al Salon del 1781. Un'altra versione è anche al The Met.
