Un appassionato amante della natura che credeva di aver sentito le voci degli alberi, Rousseau faceva parte della scuola di Barbizon, un gruppo di artisti chiamato per un villaggio a circa 30 miglia da Parigi dove erano basati. Dipingono spesso nella vicina Foresta di Fontainebleau; Rousseau ha anche aiutato a ottenere la zona conservata come un parco. Gli artisti di Barbizon facevano parte di un movimento più ampio nella letteratura, nella musica e nelle arti visive chiamato movimento romantico, in cui gli artisti dipingevano opinioni emozionali ed espressive del mondo.
