"A quel tempo Bonnard stava dipingendo questa scena di colazione estiva, Rockefeller Center si trovava a metà costruzione e l'Europa si stava preparando per la guerra. Eppure il mondo moderno sembra tutt'altro che ignorato nella pittura di Bonnard, che torna ai tetti artistici della fine del XIX secolo, i suoi colori vivaci che evocano le tele e le teorie del cerchio di Paul Gauguin. Intorno al 1890, Bonnard apparteneva al Nabis (dalla parola ebraica per ""profeta"), un gruppo che tendeva a dipingere scene mistiche o occulte per invocare stati psichici straordinari. Come mostra questo dipinto, Bonnard ha ancora prestato un'aura allucinatoria al quotidiano circa 40 anni dopo."
