Dal 1552 al 1567, il mercante inglese Thomas Gresham (1519-1579) visse e lavorò ad Anversa come agente finanziario della corona inglese (`il commerciante del re'). Questa posizione sociale di rilievo spiega perché aveva il suo ritratto dipinto da Mor, che era artista di corte a Filippo II. Questo pittore di origine utrecht è stato notato per la registrazione accurata dei dettagli nei suoi ritratti. Ha rappresentato Gresham come una personalità forte, un po' riservata. Mor dipinse anche un ritratto della moglie di Gresham, che è anche nel Rijksmuseum.
