Questo studio è il prodotto di una delle prime escursioni di pittura plein-air conosciute sulla costa del canale. Con una sensibilità pittorica legata all'osservazione diretta della natura, Valenciennes abbozzò la luce, l'atmosfera e rapidamente muovendo l'acqua alla foce del fiume Rance. Questo esercizio era destinato a formare l'occhio e la mano per catturare tali effetti fugaci in modo da poter trarre dall'esperienza quando la pittura in studio. Lo spirito investigativo degli schizzi di Valenciennes, dipinti in Francia e in Italia, li segna come risultati del segnale dell'Illuminismo.
