Subleyras è stato scelto per dipingere il ritratto di stato di Papa Benedetto XIV, ma questa immagine diretta e informale ci porta molto più vicino all'uomo che antiquario e Grand Tourist Horace Walpole descritto come “un prete senza insolenza o interesse, un principe senza favoriti.” La sua slitta mascella e le cinque ombre umanizzano la sitter più santa in Europa. Un colorista supremo, Subleyras era perfettamente adatto per affrontare la tavolozza limitata di guarnizione invernale papale di un mantello ermino-lineato (mozzetta) e cappello (camauro). La stola è decorata con le chiavi papali e i dispositivi corazzati di famiglia.
