La lava rossa del Vesuvio contrasta con il blu freddo della baia di Napoli al chiaro di luna. Volaire imparò le abilità tecniche per gli effetti leggeri come questi dal preeminente paesaggista francese Claude-Joseph Vernet, ma trovò il soggetto che lo rendesse famoso quando si trasferì a Napoli nel 1769. I suoi dipinti hanno avuto un enorme fascino per i Grand Tourists, molti dei quali hanno visitato la zona per ammirare il vulcano attivo che aveva distrutto l'antica città di Pompei. Le piccole figure umane sopraffatte dal potere awe-inspiring della natura sono tipiche di un aes-tetico conosciuto come il Sublime, una caratteristica importante della successiva pittura paesaggistica romantica.
