Nudes e la grande tradizione dell'arte classica preoccuparono Renoir nel 1880. In questo dipinto, ha reso omaggio alla Grande Odalisque di Ingres (Musée du Louvre, Parigi), anche se ha trasformato il fico cortese di Ingres in una ragazza sana, rosa-cheeked, e il harem in un paesaggio impressionista che ricorda la costa del Canale.
