L’angolo del balcone visibile a sinistra in questa composizione indica il punto panoramico di Renoir con vista sulla baia di Napoli. La sua posizione ha offerto una vista iconica del porto con il vulcano Monte Vesuvio sullo sfondo, agitando il fumo nel cielo. Ispirato alla luce del sud italiano, Renoir dipinse un'altra versione di questo panorama in un momento diverso (The Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, Mass.). James Duncan, un ricco raffinatore di zuccheri, acquistò l'opera attuale nel 1883, rendendola la prima immagine impressionista acquisita da un collezionista scozzese.
